Using the most basic words can be totally enough. It also can be a good starter for a great conversation with a local if you say “köszönöm” instead of thank you. Hungarians really appreciate your trying regardless your pronunciation is probably not perfect. These phrases are useful everywhere, not just in a restaurant. Do you want to impress a Hungarian girl or guy? Using these simple words are definitely a good point! In Hungary, people are not so open-minded at the first meeting, therefore if you want to make friends you must make the first step. Believe me, after that, they will be so welcoming and probably offer you a “Pálinka”! You will be happy that you made this little effort!
